Your vote joins the feed
Tapping the thumbs-up tells us the story resonated — one tap, done. The thumbs-down opens a small menu: "Not for me" sends a downvote, and depending on how the story is tagged, you may also see options to flag the wrong area or wrong topic.
All signals are anonymous and used offline to make the feed smarter over time. They never change what you or anyone else sees in real time. No account needed.

The Stoop surfaces the best of that information: trustworthy, useful, and local.
It works through two layers of curation: a manually maintained selection of over 100 trusted local sources — neighborhood blogs, ethnic press, public institutions, cultural venues, and regional newsrooms — and an algorithm that ranks and surfaces stories from those sources based on freshness, geographic relevance, and reader signals. The experience is finite, not endless. Each edition, starting with the morning newsletter, offers a curated set of local stories, upcoming events, and useful city data. The goal is to help you stay connected to the city and your community.
Where the information comes from
Everything in the feed comes through APIs or RSS feeds — we don't scrape any website. We only use information that publishers and public institutions are actively making available. Sources include news organizations, city agencies, the MTA, and community venues.
We display trusted sources only: established local news outlets and verified public data. No anonymous accounts, no social media speculation. The focus is local and microlocal — your borough, your neighborhood, and the region around the city. This editorial selection — deciding which sources are eligible to appear in the feed at all — is the first layer of curation.
How the feed works
The second layer is algorithmic: working from the pre-selected trusted sources, the feed ranks and surfaces stories using freshness, geographic specificity, topic relevance, and reader signals. The Agenda applies the same principle to events — a curated set of sources (Resident Advisor, NYC city events, Ticketmaster) ranked by how soon the event is, whether it is free, the source, and reader saves. Every headline you read is written by a journalist or comes from a public source. Every event listing comes from a verified venue or organiser. AI is used for ranking, clustering, and search — never to generate or rewrite the text you see.
How often we update
News sources are fetched 3 times a day — there are morning, afternoon, and evening editions. Events are updated once daily. Weather refreshes approximately every 20 minutes from real observation data.
Privacy
We use an open source, self-hosted analytics solution to understand how The Stoop is used. We collect minimal, anonymized data — no personal information, no cross-site tracking — only to improve the site.
No account or registration is required. Your preferences — saved events, weather location, borough selection, and card settings — are stored locally on your device and never sent to our servers.
